A Monotreme is the name given to members of
the primitive (approx 200million years)
mammalian order Monotremata, found in
Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea.
The only members are the PLATYPUS and several
species of ECHIDNA. They are unique among the
MAMMAL family in that they lay eggs instead
of bearing live young.
Certain skeletal features resemble those of
the REPTILE, from which the monotremes
evolved. Adults are toothless; males have
spurs connectedto poison glands on their hind
feet.
