  1. A Monotreme is the name given to members of
  2. the primitive (approx 200million years)
  3. mammalian order Monotremata, found in
  4. Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea.
  5. The only members are the PLATYPUS and several
  6. species of ECHIDNA. They are unique among the
  7. MAMMAL family in that they lay eggs instead
  8. of bearing live young.
  9. Certain skeletal features resemble those of
  10. the REPTILE, from which the monotremes 
  11. evolved. Adults are toothless; males have
  12. spurs connectedto poison glands on their hind
  13. feet.
